The wooden drawbridge in the city centre of Amsterdam is called ‘Magere Brug’ (Skinny Bridge). It’s one of many beautiful bridges in Amsterdam. The bridge was once so narrow that only two pedestrians could walk next to each other. When traffic on the Amstel increased, the bridge was replaced in 1871 with a slightly wider one.

There is a story about The Skinny Bridge. This legend tells us that the bridge was named after the “Magere Zussen” (Skinny Sisters). They lived on opposite sides of the river and needed the bridge to visit each other. Nowadays the bridge is a charming site and popular with couples and photographers. At night thousands of lights illuminate the bridge and make it one of the most beautiful bridges of the Netherlands.
